Providing opportunities for students to experience
science phenomena firsthand is the goal of the new middle school
science program—Science & Technology Concepts for Middle School (STC/MS).
Each grade level will delve into two inquiry modules to enhance both
skills and knowledge utilizing this comprehensive, research-based
curriculum.
Sixth grade students will explore the growth and
development of organisms through the inquiry module—Organisms-From
Macro to Micro. Cabbage white butterflies and hydra are examples of
the living specimens that students will investigate. Earth In Space is
the second module for sixth grade. Relationships between the
Sun-Earth-Moon will be investigated as well as planetary processes.
In seventh grade, students will be immersed in the
study of thunderstorms, tornadoes, earthquakes, hurricanes and
volcanoes. Through the Catastrophic Events module, topics such as
global heating, convection, air pressure, plate motion, viscosity and
crystallization will be investigated. Properties of Matter is the
other focal area for seventh grade. Density, mixtures and solutions,
compounds, elements and chemical reactions will be a part of the
students’ daily examinations.
Areas of life and physical science will be the
framework for the eighth grade units. Human Body Systems will tap the
curiosity of how the digestive, respiratory, circulatory and
musculoskeletal systems operate. In addition, diseases, nutrition and
physical fitness will complement the human anatomy and physiology
components. Don’t be surprised when you walk by an eighth grade
science lab to see elaborate structures built using K’nex. This is
part of Energy, Machines and Motion which engages students in both
physical science and technological design concepts. Experimentation in
energy transformations, energy conservation and simple machines are
highlights of this module.
In addition to STC/MS, students will participate in
units of study created by the teachers such as the study of the
environment around us including the Pineland and Coastal Regions.
