     Mathematics is not just a collection of skills, but rather a way of thinking. Counting, measuring, and computing are observable behaviors that evolve from this system or related ideas and concepts. These behaviors become more useful to students when they are developed based on conceptual understanding. Students who understand the underlying concepts are more likely to transfer these behaviors to new learning and real-world situations.

     We believe that the study of mathematics must help students to develop:

          *A conceptual understanding of the interrelated ideas, concepts, principles, skills, and the logic of mathematical thinking;

          *The ability to discover and classify patterns;

          *The ability to compute accurately and efficiently;

          *Competence in estimation and in judging and reasonableness of answers;

          *Facility in the use of calculator and computer technology;

          *An appreciation of the power of mathematics; and

          *Positive attitudes towards mathematics and appropriate, productive beliefs about the learning of mathematics.

     The student who has internalized these fundamental understandings and abilities and developed positive attitudes will apply mathematics competently and confidently in school and real-life situations. The Prentice Hall Connected Mathematics Program is the series utilized to afford students practice opportunities in the above.
